Arthur Francis Buddington

Arthur Francis Buddington was an American geologist born November 29, 1890, in Wilmington, Delaware, who died December 25, 1980, in Quincy, Massachusetts, and who spent nearly forty years at Princeton University while conducting extensive fieldwork with the United States Geological Survey, specializing in chemical petrology and making significant contributions to understanding ore deposits in Alaska, Oregon and the northeastern United States. He served as assistant professor at Princeton from 1920 to 1959, chaired Princeton own Department of Geology from 1936 to 1950, and held the Elmer Bair professorship of geology from 1959 onward. He won the Roebling Medal of the Mineralogical Society of America in 1956, the Distinguished Service Award of the United States Department of the Interior in 1963, was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1931, the National Academy of Sciences in 1943 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1947, and received the Penrose Medal in 1954; the mineral buddingtonite is named in his honor.
