Maarten Schmidt was a Dutch-born American astronomer who lived from 1929 to 2022, who first measured the distances of quasars and was the first astronomer to identify a quasar, work that put him on the cover of Time magazine in March 1966. He received the inaugural Kavli Prize in Astrophysics in 2008, shared with Donald Lynden-Bell, for their seminal contributions to understanding the nature of quasars.
