James Van Allen was an American space physicist at the University of Iowa who helped establish the field of magnetospheric research. Using instruments he designed for early United States satellites, he discovered the zones of energetic charged particles trapped by Earth's magnetic field that now bear his name, the first major scientific finding of the Space Age.
