Raymond Cecil Moore

Raymond Cecil Moore was an American geologist and paleontologist born February 20, 1892, in Roslyn, Washington, who died April 16, 1974, in Lawrence, Kansas, and who served with the United States Geological Survey from 1913 to 1949 while also joining the faculty of the University of Kansas in 1919, becoming its Solon E. Summerfield Distinguished Professor in 1958. He specialized in Paleozoic invertebrate fossils including crinoids, bryozoans, and corals, developed stratigraphic frameworks for the midcontinent region and studies of cyclical sedimentation, and founded and edited the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology beginning in 1953. He served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1958, received the Paleontological Society Medal in 1963, the Wollaston Medal in 1968, the Mary Clark Thompson Medal in 1970, and the Twenhofel Medal in 1972.
