William Berryman Scott was an American vertebrate paleontologist born February 12, 1858, in Cincinnati, Ohio, who died March 29, 1947, and who served as principal author of the White River Oligocene monographs, establishing himself as an authority on mammals of that geological period, and who described the fossil mammal Apataelurus kayi in 1937; a pike cichlid fish, Crenicichla scottii, was named in his honor in 1907. He was educated at Princeton University, graduating in 1877, and earned a doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in 1880, going on to serve as professor of geology and paleontology at Princeton, president of the Geological Society of America in 1925, and president of the American Society of Naturalists in 1896. He received the Wollaston Medal in 1910, the Mary Clark Thompson Medal in 1930, the Penrose Medal in 1939, and the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal in 1940.
