Vilem Mathesius

Vilem Mathesius was a Czech linguist and the founder of the Prague Linguistic Circle, established in 1926 as a gathering of scholars including Roman Jakobson and Nikolai Trubetzkoy that became one of the most influential centers of structuralist linguistics in the twentieth century. Mathesius developed what he called functional sentence perspective, an approach to analyzing sentence structure in terms of the distribution of given and new information across a sentence, commonly described using the concepts of theme and rheme, which remains an influential framework in functional linguistics and discourse analysis. Mathesius also argued for studying language synchronically as a functional system organized around the communicative needs of its speakers, a position that shaped the Prague School's broader functionalist approach to phonology and grammar. Mathesius held the first chair of English studies at Charles University in Prague, where he trained a generation of Czech linguists.
