Nilratan Sircar

Sir Nilratan Sircar (1861-1943) was an Indian physician and medical educator in colonial Bengal. Trained at Campbell Medical School in Calcutta, he became one of the most prominent medical practitioners of his era and later served as vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta from 1919 to 1921. He chaired the first governing body of the Bose Institute, took part in establishing the Science College of the University of Calcutta and the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, and used income from his practice to fund science and technical education across Bengal. He was knighted in 1918 for his contributions to medical education, and Campbell Medical College was renamed in his honor after his death.
