Alan Heeger is an American physicist and academic who was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2002 for co-founding the field of conducting polymers. He shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Alan MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa for the discovery and development of conductive polymers, plastics able to carry an electric current.
