Edward L. Keenan

Edward L. Keenan is an American linguist who earned his PhD in formal linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969, became a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1974, and is now Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus in its Department of Linguistics. His scholarship spans natural logic, language typology, historical English syntax and the grammar of Malagasy and other Austronesian languages, examining voice phenomena, relative clauses and structural properties in Malagasy in particular. He co-edited the 970-page Handbook of Quantifiers in Natural Language (2012) with Denis Paperno and has published extensively on binding theory, anaphora, determiners and the relation between linguistic meaning and formal logic.
