James G. Moore

James G. Moore is an American volcanologist, born in 1930, Scientist Emeritus at the United States Geological Survey, who served as scientist in charge of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in the early 1960s and fundamentally advanced understanding of Hawaiian volcanic structures, demonstrating that basaltic ocean islands like those in Hawaii are susceptible to catastrophic landslide collapse capable of generating tsunamis. He also played a central role documenting the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, determining the sequence of events and measuring the volume of its landslide, and conducted additional research in the Lassen Peak region and the Sierra Nevada. He received the Penrose Medal in 2020.
