Esper Signius Larsen Jr., known as Esper S. Larsen Jr., was an American geologist and petrologist born March 14, 1879, in Astoria, Oregon, who died March 8, 1961, in Berkeley, California, and who developed techniques for age estimation using the lead-uranium ratio, known as the Larsen method, and conducted petrological study of non-opaque minerals using optical microscopy techniques; with Harry Berman he co-authored The Microscopic Determination of the Nonopaque Minerals in 1934, described as a major landmark in mineralogy. He served as a geologist with the United States Geological Survey from 1909 to 1923 and again after 1949, held a professorship of petrology at Harvard University from 1923 to 1949, and conducted research at the Carnegie Institution in Washington. The mineral esperite, originally named calcium larsenite before being renamed in 1965, honors him, and this wave grounds his 1953 Penrose Medal in the Geological Society of America own recipient roster.
