Kingsley Charles Dunham

Kingsley Charles Dunham was a British geologist and mineralogist born January 2, 1910, in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, England, who died April 5, 2001, in Durham, England, and who served as professor of geology at the University of Durham from 1950 to 1971, remaining professor emeritus from 1967, and directed the British Geological Survey from 1967 to 1975. His research addressed ore deposits in the North Pennines, and he supervised the Rookhope borehole drilling program that discovered a concealed granite layer beneath the Pennines. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955, knighted in 1972, received the Sorby Medal in 1963, the Bolitho Medal in 1973, the Royal Medal in 1970, and the Wollaston Medal in 1976; the British Geological Survey Keyworth site was named the Kingsley Dunham Centre in his honor in 1990.
