W. Gary Ernst

W. Gary Ernst is an American geologist, born in 1931, the Benjamin M. Page Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, who chaired UCLA own Department of Earth and Space Sciences before serving as dean of Stanford own School of Earth Sciences from 1989 to 2004. His research addressed the petrology, geochemistry and plate tectonics of circum-Pacific and Alpine mobile belts, including ultrahigh pressure metamorphism in Eurasia and the regional geology of California. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1975 and served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1986, later receiving its Roebling Medal in 2006 and the Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal in 2008. He received the Penrose Medal in 2004.
