Waldemar Christofer Brogger

Waldemar Christofer Brogger was a Norwegian geologist and mineralogist born November 10, 1851, in Christiania, now Oslo, Norway, who died February 17, 1940, in Oslo, and whose research on the Permian igneous rocks of the Oslo district, formed some 286 to 245 million years ago, greatly advanced petrologic theory on rock formation; he also proposed that pegmatites form through the interaction of silicate melt and supercritical water. He served as professor of mineralogy and geology at Stockholm University from 1881 to 1890 and professor of mineralogy and palaeontology at the University of Christiania from 1890 to 1916, also serving as rector of that university senate from 1907 to 1911. He won the Murchison Medal in 1891, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1890, was made a Knight of the Order of St. Olav among other honors, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1911.
