Franz Ritter von Hauer was an Austrian geologist born January 30, 1822, in Vienna, who died March 20, 1899, and who studied geology at the Schemnitz mining academy from 1839 to 1843, became assistant to Wilhelm von Haidinger at the Vienna mineralogical museum in 1846, joined the imperial geological institute in 1849, was appointed its director in 1866, and became superintendent of the Imperial Natural History Museum in Vienna from 1886. He recognized and described eighty-nine cephalopod species from Triassic and Jurassic Alpine formations, established stratigraphical units for Middle and Late Triassic deep shelf environments, and produced the twelve-sheet Geological Map of Austria-Hungary between 1867 and 1871, revised to a fourth edition in 1884, alongside Beitrage zur Palaeontolographie von Osterreich in 1858 and 1859 and Die Geologie und ihre Anwendung auf die Kenntnis der Bodenbeschaffenheit der Osterr.-Ungar. Monarchie in 1875. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1874, named a foreign correspondent of the Geological Society of London, appointed a life member of the Austrian parliament upper house in 1892, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1882; the mineral hauerite is named after him and his father.
