Arthur Philemon Coleman was a Canadian geologist born April 4, 1852, in Lachute, Canada East, who died February 26, 1939, and who described the roughly 145-kilogram iron-nickel Manitou Asiniy meteorite that fell in Canada in 1886, one of the most important meteorites both scientifically and historically ever to fall there, and who in 1907 inferred a lower Huronian ice age from geological formations near Lake Huron. He served as professor of geology and natural history at Victoria College from 1882, professor of geology at the School of Practical Science in Toronto from 1891 to 1901, geologist at the Bureau of Mines of the Government of Ontario from 1893 to 1909, professor of geology at the University of Toronto from 1901 to 1922, dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Toronto from 1919 to 1922, and director of the Museum of Geology at the Royal Ontario Museum from 1913. He won the Murchison Medal in 1910, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society the same year, served as president of the Royal Society of Canada in 1921 and president of the Geological Society of America in 1915, won the Flavelle Medal around 1928, and received the Penrose Medal in 1936.
