Paul F. Hoffman

Paul Felix Hoffman is a Canadian geologist born March 21, 1941, in Toronto, Ontario, who is professor emeritus at the University of Victoria and formerly held the Sturgis Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard University. Working from sedimentary rocks in Namibia, he became widely known for his research on Snowball Earth glaciation in the Neoproterozoic era, publishing the landmark 1998 paper A Neoproterozoic Snowball Earth in the journal Science. He received the Logan Medal of the Geological Association of Canada in 1992, the Wollaston Medal in 2009, the Walter H. Bucher Medal in 2010, the Penrose Medal in 2011, was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2012, and received the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences in 2024.
