Edward Battersby Bailey

Sir Edward Battersby Bailey was a British geologist born July 1, 1881, in Marden, Kent, England, who died March 19, 1965, in London, and who studied at Clare College, Cambridge, before joining the Geological Survey of England and Wales in 1902, holding the chair of geology at the University of Glasgow from 1929 to 1937, and directing the British Geological Survey from 1937 to 1945. He specialized in structural geology and tectonics, particularly of Alpine and Scottish formations, and wrote influential works on the historical development of geology through James Hutton and Charles Lyell. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1930, received the Royal Medal in 1943, was knighted in 1945, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1948; he was also a foreign member of national academies in Belgium, India, Norway, Switzerland and the United States.
