William Buckland was an English theologian, geologist and palaeontologist who served as Dean of Westminster. In 1824 he gave the first full scientific description of a dinosaur genus, which he named Megalosaurus, and he was an early investigator of fossil coprolites, work that helped establish palaeontology as a rigorous scientific discipline.
