Susan L. Brantley

Susan L. Brantley is an American geologist and geochemist born in 1958 who holds the Barnes professorship at Pennsylvania State University. Her research addresses interactions between fluids and minerals at low temperatures, biological reactions in water rich fluids within soils, and the geochemical processes that convert rock into soil, and she has also published on volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, the impacts of shale gas extraction, and nuclear waste disposal. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, and received the Arthur L. Day Medal in 2011, the Wollaston Medal in 2016, the Geochemistry Division Medal of the American Chemical Society in 2017, and the Urey Medal in 2018.
