Wendell Phillips Woodring, known as Wendell P. Woodring, was an American paleontologist and geologist born June 13, 1891, in Reading, Pennsylvania, who died January 29, 1983, in Santa Barbara, California, and who gained an international reputation for research on invertebrate fossils of the Tertiary period and on Tertiary stratigraphy in California, Central America and the Caribbean, including work on Tertiary mollusks and marine fossils and on the geological history of the Panama land bridge. He served as professor of invertebrate paleontology at the California Institute of Technology from 1927 to 1930, was geologist in charge of Haiti geological survey from 1920 to 1922, joined the United States Geological Survey in 1930, worked as a petroleum geologist headquartered at the University of California, Los Angeles during the Second World War, and continued research at the Survey headquarters in its Stratigraphy and Paleontology Division until his retirement in 1961. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1925, a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1946 and of the American Philosophical Society in 1953, served as president of the Paleontological Society from 1948 to 1949 and president of the Geological Society of America from 1953 to 1954, won the Mary Clark Thompson Medal in 1967 and the Paleontological Society Medal in 1977, and received the Penrose Medal in 1949.
