George Poulett Scrope

George Julius Poulett Scrope was an English geologist, political economist and Member of Parliament born March 10, 1797, in London, who died January 19, 1876, in Cobham, Surrey, and who earned a Bachelor of Arts in geology from St John College, Cambridge, in 1821, served as joint secretary of the Geological Society of London from 1825, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826, and sat as MP for Stroud, Gloucestershire, from 1833 to 1867. His extensive field research on volcanic regions across France, Italy and Germany produced what is regarded as the earliest systematic treatise on volcanology, helping to overturn earlier geological theories, and he published Considerations on Volcanos in 1825, Memoir on the Geology of Central France in 1827, The Geology and Extinct Volcanos of Central France in 1858 and Volcanos in 1862. He served as the first president of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society in 1853 and received the Wollaston Medal in 1867.
