Luis Federico Leloir (1906-1987) was an Argentine biochemist awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1970 for discovering sugar nucleotides, compounds that carry sugar molecules in an activated form usable by enzymes, and for clarifying their central role in the biosynthesis of carbohydrates within living cells. Working for most of his career in a small, chronically underfunded private research institute in Buenos Aires that he helped establish, he identified uridine diphosphate glucose, the first sugar nucleotide discovered, and traced the biochemical pathways by which cells build and interconvert complex carbohydrates such as glycogen and lactose. His discoveries clarified the underlying biochemistry of several inherited metabolic disorders. He remained active at his Buenos Aires institute, which came to bear his name, for the rest of his career rather than relocating to a larger foreign laboratory.
