Carlos Bustamante is a Peruvian-American biophysicist known for developing single-molecule techniques, including optical tweezers and atomic force microscopy, to directly observe the mechanical behavior of DNA, RNA and the protein machines that act on them. He has also conducted research applying population genetics and genomic analysis to the ancestry and history of Latin American populations.
