Jeffrey I. Gordon is an American biologist who holds the Dr. Robert J. Glaser Distinguished University Professorship at Washington University School of Medicine, where he directs the Edison Family Center for Genome Sciences and Systems Biology. Regarded as a founder of human microbiome research, his studies of healthy and undernourished children in low and middle income countries have shown how the community of microbes in the gut develops in early childhood and how a disrupted gut microbiome can contribute to childhood undernutrition.
