John Maynard Smith was a British theoretical and mathematical evolutionary biologist and geneticist who trained first as an aeronautical engineer before taking a second degree in genetics under J. B. S. Haldane. Working with George R. Price, he was instrumental in applying game theory to evolutionary biology, and he wrote influential work on the evolution of sex and on animal signalling.
