Sir Martin John Evans is an English biologist who, with Matthew Kaufman, was the first to isolate and culture mouse embryonic stem cells in the laboratory in 1981. Along with Mario Capecchi and Oliver Smithies he developed the knockout mouse and the related technique of gene targeting, a method that uses embryonic stem cells to introduce specific genetic changes in mice, work for which the three shared the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
