Bernardo Houssay

Life Sciences

Bernardo Houssay (1887-1971) was an Argentine physiologist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1947, the first Nobel Prize in a scientific field awarded to a Latin American, for discovering the role of hormones from the anterior pituitary gland in regulating the amount of sugar in the blood. His research established that pituitary hormones counteract the blood sugar lowering effect of insulin, clarifying a key mechanism of glucose metabolism relevant to understanding diabetes. He founded and directed the Institute for Biology and Experimental Medicine in Buenos Aires, building it into a leading Latin American research center despite losing his university professorship for several years under a government he opposed. He trained and mentored several later Argentine Nobel laureates in medicine and chemistry, establishing a durable tradition of physiological research in Argentina.
