Hemendra Nath Chatterjee was an Indian physician and medical researcher known for early work on oral rehydration therapy for cholera and severe diarrhea. In the early 1950s he published a formula combining dilute salt and glucose solutions, administered both rectally and orally to cholera patients, with his findings appearing in The Lancet in 1952 and 1953. His approach anticipated the glucose-electrolyte oral rehydration therapy that later became a standard worldwide treatment for dehydration, though his work went largely unrecognized by Western medicine for years.
