Francis Willughby was an English naturalist who, with his close collaborator John Ray, undertook to classify the natural world by physical characteristics rather than by folklore, myth or alphabet. Willughby's Ornithology, published by Ray in 1676 as Ornithologiae Libri Tres four years after Willughby's early death, was intended to describe all the then known birds worldwide and is credited with founding scientific ornithology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1661 at the age of twenty seven.
