William Kirby was an English clergyman and entomologist known as the founder of British entomology. Working with William Spence, a friendship formed in 1805, he wrote the four volume An Introduction to Entomology, published between 1815 and 1826, which became the standard English language textbook of the science for much of the nineteenth century. Kirby also helped found the Entomological Society of London in 1833 and served as its first president.
