Ecole Polytechnique is a French engineering and scientific institution in Paris, founded in 1794. Sadi Carnot trained there before his career as a military engineer and his 1824 memoir founding the science of thermodynamics.

Jacques-Elie Lamblardie, Gaspard Monge and Lazare Carnot, the founding fathers of the School, were charged with organizing a new 'Ecole centrale des travaux publics' which was officially created on 7 Vendemiaire, Year III (28 September 1794).
