The Ecological Society of America was founded on 28 December 1915 in Columbus, Ohio, when about fifty scientists meeting alongside the American Association for the Advancement of Science voted to form the society, with Victor E. Shelford serving as its first president. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it publishes the peer reviewed journals Ecology, Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, and Ecosphere, holds an annual meeting, and works to unify the science of ecology and promote the responsible application of ecological knowledge to environmental problems.
