A research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded in 1861. Its meteorology program, later folded into the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, was where Edward Lorenz carried out the numerical weather modeling that led to his 1961 discovery of sensitive dependence on initial conditions, the finding that founded the study of deterministic chaos.
