Met Office

The Met Office is the United Kingdom's national weather service. It was established in 1854 as a small department within the Board of Trade under Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy, the former captain of HMS Beagle on Darwin's voyage, initially to collect weather data for ships' safety rather than to forecast; FitzRoy later pushed it into issuing the first public daily weather forecasts, coining the word forecast for the purpose, a practice contested by parts of the scientific establishment of the time as overreaching what the data could support. It has been headquartered in Exeter, in southwest England, since 2003, having previously been based in London and then Bracknell.
