Ume Tange, also known as Umeko Tange, was one of the first three women admitted to a Japanese university in 1913. She earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1927, among the first Japanese women awarded a science doctorate, then returned to Japan to research vitamins, especially vitamin B2, at RIKEN, and later earned a second doctorate in agricultural science from Tokyo Imperial University in 1940.
