Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi

Mathematics

Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi was a German mathematician who lived from 1804 to 1851 and made fundamental contributions to the theory of elliptic functions, dynamics, differential equations, determinants and number theory. Born in Potsdam to an Ashkenazi Jewish banking family, he became a tenured professor at Konigsberg University in 1829, where his development of elliptic function theory and theta functions became central to mathematical physics. He popularized the partial derivative symbol and contributed innovations including the Jacobian matrix and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation to classical mechanics.
