George Boole was an English mathematician and philosopher who lived from 1815 to 1864 and transformed logic from a philosophical subject into a mathematical system now called Boolean algebra, built on binary values and logical operators. His 1854 book The Laws of Thought set out the algebraic approach to logic that later became essential to digital circuit design and computer science. Claude Shannon and Victor Shestakov later applied Boole algebra to the design of electromechanical relay circuits, work that helped enable the development of modern electronic computers.
