Arthur Cayley

Mathematics

Arthur Cayley was an English mathematician who lived from 1821 to 1895 and, working mostly in algebra, helped establish modern British pure mathematics during his thirty five years as a professor at Trinity College, Cambridge. He formulated the Cayley-Hamilton theorem concerning square matrices and was the first to give an abstract definition of a mathematical group. Numerous concepts still bear his name, including Cayley graphs and Cayley formula in combinatorics.
