Stephen Cole Kleene was an American mathematician and logician who lived from 1909 to 1994 and became a founder of recursion theory, a branch of mathematical logic that laid groundwork for theoretical computer science. A student of Alonzo Church, he worked alongside Alan Turing and Emil Post in establishing the study of computable functions. He developed regular expressions and the Kleene star, contributed several theorems and hierarchies that bear his name, advanced mathematical intuitionism through recursive realizability, and received the National Medal of Science in 1990.
