Caucher Birkar is an Iranian Kurdish and British mathematician, based in the United Kingdom, who is a professor at Tsinghua University and an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham. An important contributor to modern birational geometry, he received the Leverhulme Prize in 2010 and shared the AMS Moore Prize in 2016, and in 2018 he was awarded the Fields Medal for his proof of the boundedness of Fano varieties and his contributions to the minimal model program.
