Rene Frederic Thom (1923 to 2002) was a French mathematician who received the Fields Medal in 1958. He made his early reputation as a topologist working on singularity theory, and became known well beyond mathematics as the founder of catastrophe theory, later developed further by Christopher Zeeman.
