William Paul Thurston (1946 to 2012) was an American mathematician and a pioneer of low-dimensional topology, awarded the Fields Medal in 1982 for his contributions to the study of three-manifolds. He held professorships at Princeton University, the University of California, Davis, and Cornell University, and directed the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.
