Lars Hormander (1931 to 2012) was a Swedish mathematician described as the foremost contributor to the modern theory of linear partial differential equations. He developed pseudo-differential operators and Fourier integral operators as fundamental tools in the field, and was awarded the Fields Medal in 1962 and the Wolf Prize in 1988.
