Geoffrey Pullum

Geoffrey K. Pullum is a linguist born March 8, 1945, in Irvine, Scotland, who holds both British and American citizenship since 1987 and has held positions at University College London from 1974 to 1982, the University of California, Santa Cruz from 1981 to 2007, and the University of Edinburgh from 2007 to 2020, where he is now professor emeritus. He co-authored the 2002 reference work The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language, co-founded the blog Language Log, and has published more than three hundred articles and books across phonology, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, computational linguistics, and philosophy of language, including work establishing the existence of object-initial languages and arguing that English negative contractions function as an inflectional morpheme rather than a syntactic contraction. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003 and of the British Academy in 2009, and shared the Leonard Bloomfield Book Award in 2004.
