Leon N. Cooper (1930-2024) was an American theoretical physicist and neuroscientist. He shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Bardeen and John Robert Schrieffer for their jointly developed theory of superconductivity, known as BCS theory, in which Cooper's own contribution was the pairing of electrons now called Cooper pairs. Later in his career he turned to neuroscience, co-developing the BCM theory of synaptic plasticity.
