Zhores Alferov

Physics

Zhores Alferov (1930-2019) was a Soviet and Russian physicist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000, jointly with Herbert Kroemer and Jack Kilby, for developing semiconductor heterostructures, layered semiconductor materials with differing band gaps that made possible fast, efficient opto-electronic devices including the laser diodes used in fiber optic communication, barcode scanners and optical data storage. His research, carried out largely at the Ioffe Institute in Leningrad through the 1960s and 1970s, proceeded in parallel with related American work and helped establish the semiconductor heterostructure as a foundation of modern electronics. He later became a member of the Russian State Duma and an advocate for science funding and education in post Soviet Russia. He remained scientific director of the Ioffe Institute for decades after his Nobel Prize.
