Adam Sedgwick was a British geologist and Anglican priest, one of the founders of modern geology. From his fieldwork on Welsh rock strata he proposed the Cambrian geological period in 1835, in the same joint publication where Roderick Murchison proposed the Silurian period; the two later worked together to define the Devonian period. He taught geology at Cambridge, where his students included Charles Darwin.
