Hans Cloos was a German structural geologist born November 8, 1885, in Magdeburg, German Empire, who died September 26, 1951, in Bonn, West Germany, and who pioneered the study of rock deformation, particularly granite tectonics, using scaled analogue models to investigate the mechanics of faulting and continental structural development; he was also known for artistic talent in music and draftsmanship. He earned his doctorate at Freiburg in 1910, worked in Indonesia and Namibia before the First World War, applied his geological skills along the western front during that war, became professor of geology at the University of Breslau in 1919, and moved to the University of Bonn in 1926 as professor of geology, where his doctoral students included Henryk Stenzel, Ihsan Ketin and Henno Martin. He received the Penrose Medal in 1948; a lunar wrinkle ridge, Dorsum Cloos, is named in his honor.
