Lev Pontryagin (1908-1988) was a Soviet mathematician who made major contributions to algebraic topology, differential topology, and optimal control theory, working despite having been completely blind from the age of fourteen. He is known for Pontryagin duality and the Pontryagin classes in topology, and for Pontryagin's maximum principle, which remains a foundational tool in modern optimization theory.
